"TEA WITH SUGAR is an invitation that cannot be refused. The viewer readily accepts a cup and indulges in the visual poetry of the welcome diversion. An aerial view allows for a full and flat exhibition of the pattern on the table, legroom for the shadows to stretch out as needed and an exposition of the unique characteristics of three ceramic vessels which compete for attention. Delicate and flowing vines build upwards in concentric rings on the teapot to the small handle on the lid. Precise, tiny flowers in an intricate design, decrease in perfect measure as they deepen inside the mismatched sugar bowl. The teaspoon soaks inside the cup where the remaining, yellow tea forms a solid, round shape which counters and anchors all the patterns and warms the gathering like a sun in a landscape. This privileged information is made visible and accessible thanks to this viewpoint from directly above, which is a departure from the standard still life composition. Striped, lightweight fabric plays against the circles and squares and softens the heavy objects in this exquisite, perfect and sunny painting. Sure, why not?
